The song you are talking about is 'Bistirno Parore' in Assamese or 'Ganga' in Hindi. But that is Dr. Bhupen Hazarika's cover of Paul Robeson's 'Ol'man River' rather than a copy. Paul Robeson was his mentor at Columbia University in the US where Dr. Hazarika did his PhD. He has talked about this in several interviews, here is one of them :youtube(dot)com/watch?v=y-N9REhwVXI . You’re right that he was inspired by Paul Robeson. I think it is adapted
from “Megh Thom Thom Kore from” when Bhupenda was in Bangladesh for Alamgir
Kabir's film Simana Pariye [1977] (Beyond Borders). Bhupenda composed music
