This has got to be one of the most moving pieces of music ever written!

Harvey Williams on Thursday, February 07, 2013
Many Many Thanks for your very kind words, they are truly appreciated
believe me. I will think of them each time I hear this beautiful music.

Many thanks for your very kind words, they will be a great comfort in the
coming weeks of tests, I will think of them each time I hear this beautiful
music. Thanks again.

Musical perfection!

jewelmarkess on Saturday, March 30, 2013
I suggest you a) check your hearing b) learn to distinguish voices c) read
the description. FYI: Callas has never recording this song, any Lieder, any
art songs in general or anything in German.

Gold Snake on Tuesday, April 30, 2013
You do realise that it is essentially a religious piece, right? Ave Maria
means Hail Mary, it's a Catholic prayer to the Virgin Mary. I'd be shocked
if people didn't mention religion in the comments. Besides, he's not even
being preachy about it, so simmer down.

Gold Snake on Tuesday, April 30, 2013
Uh-huh. But watcher's comment is dumb because it's an inherently religious
piece. He objects to anyone even mentioning religion in a piece where the
words are from a Catholic Prayer. Hence why matti called her "our blessed
mother", that's how the Catholics do things. You don't have to be
interested in religion to like the music, course not, but that doesn't mean
you have to silence those who do.

This song is part of a cycle of songs called "Liederzyklus vom Fräulein vom
See " or "Cycle of song from Lady of the Lake" i.e. from poem "Lady of the
Lake" by Walter Scott translated into German from English by Storck. The
song real title is Ellens dritter Gesang (Ellen's third song). Yes, it's a
prayer, but it's a prayer of a character in a poem, a lady in 16th century
Scottland who prays for her and her father's safety. It's as religious as
any prayer in a play or novel.

jewelmarkess on Friday, May 03, 2013
Just FYI (if you are interested): this song is about as religious as any
prayer of a character in a work of literature or music. The song's real
name is "Ellens dritter Gesang" - Ellen's third song - from the cycle of 7
songs to Lady of the Lake. Ellen Douglas lives in 16th century Scottland at
the time of James V. Not that it matters as people obviously can appreciate
art regardless as you said. Even create art, I seriously doubt artists who
painted Venus believed in Venus.

jewelmarkess on Friday, May 03, 2013
Do these sound like words of from catholic Ave Maria prayer to you: "Ave
Maria! maiden mild! Listen to a maiden's prayer! Thou canst hear though
from the wild; Thou canst save amid despair. Safe may we sleep beneath thy
care, Though banish'd, outcast and reviled – Maiden! hear a maiden's
prayer; Mother, hear a suppliant child!" Just asking, of course everyone
has a right to comment as one sees fit.

jewelmarkess on Friday, May 03, 2013
The description has lyrics, it also mentions the name of the author. The
words are actually quite beautiful and a work of art in themselves (not the
uploader's translation from German but the original English words of Walter
Scott from which the German lyrics came from).

jewelmarkess on Saturday, May 04, 2013
Silly me, and I thought that the Latin Ave Maria prayer starts with "Ave
Maria, gratia plena" or in English "Ave Maria full of grace" and not "Ave
Maria, Maiden mild." The former are words from Latin Ave Maria prayer,
the latter are words from a literary work. In literary works, characters
often pray, catholic characters like a girl in 16th century Scottland pray
to Mary, while characters in Greek tragedies pray to Greek gods. Do you
think all such pieces should provoke religious discussions?

Dan76135 .lorenzo on Sunday, May 05, 2013
Thanks. Also really i thought of it off the top of my head

Dan76135 .lorenzo on Friday, May 10, 2013
It's like this song touches the soul right?

jewelmarkess on Wednesday, May 29, 2013
The reason so many people are confused is a) somewhat misleading
description even though it does say it's Bonney for people who bother to
read it b) there are zillion fakes here with Callas picture and title on
songs she's never even recorded. Actually, I don't think she's ever
recorded anything but operas and opera arias.

jewelmarkess on Monday, June 03, 2013
Proof? Numerous FAKES here where people claim that the singer is Maria
Callas when in fact it's not do not count. I don't know what Maria Callas
may have sung in her shower, she has never recorded anything by Schubert,
anything in German (she only performed in languages she was fluent in), or
as far as I know any art songs - all of her recordings are opera arias or
full operas. The only Ave Maria she recorded is by Verdi, and this is an
aria Desdemona sings in opera Otello.

jewelmarkess on Thursday, June 06, 2013
Barbara Bonney is an opera singer even though she is very famous for Lieder
like this song as well, but she is also famous for her roles in Mozart and
R. Strauss operas.

jewelmarkess on Friday, June 07, 2013
You have a point. True. BTW - the English is actually original here, not
the translation, but I read it, so I know the words of Lady of the Lake.
But true, good point.

Rustina61 on Wednesday, June 12, 2013
Like listening to Heaven sing...

serrateresa on Thursday, June 13, 2013
This isn't Callas' voice, it's Barbara Bonney, it actually says so in the
description. Callas has never sung anything in languages she wasn't fluent
in. She didn't know German, so she even sang Wagner in Italian. There are
multiple fakes here from people who took this recording of BARBARA BONNEY
and added Callas picture, but no, the only Ave Maria Callas ever recorded
is by Verdi, and if you listen to it, you'll hear the difference in voice.

serrateresa on Thursday, June 13, 2013
Actually, Schubert wrote it as part of a cycle of songs called Liederzyklus
vom Fräulein vom See (Cycle of songs from Lady of the Lake, "Lady of the
Lake" being a poem by Walter Scott translated into German). This song is
called Ellens dritter Gesang (Ellen's third song) in which a Scottish lady
Ellen Douglas prays for her and her father's safety as they hide in a cave
from his enemies. Bonney makes it very convincing prayer of a young lady
for her and her father's safety.

avemariaclark on Saturday, June 15, 2013
No need to be nasty! Just listen and enjoy!

jewelmarkess on Monday, June 24, 2013
This is Barbara Bonney. Comes from this one or a similar CD:
/watch?v=OXXoBsLO9Iw You can compare the voice. It has nothing to do with
range - this is also a soprano. Maria Callas has never recorded anything by
Schubert though or anything in German (she even recorded Wagner in
Italian). In fact, I don't believe Callas recorded any art songs at all,
only operas and opera arias. BTW - Callas was a dramatic coloratura
soprano; Barbara Bonney here is a light lyric soprano, but both are
sopranos.

jenelyn kimpaoy on Tuesday, June 25, 2013
a great voice one of the best voices sung great voice great song PAT

jenelyn kimpaoy on Tuesday, June 25, 2013
a great voice a great song one of best voices ever PAT LAFRATTA

jewelmarkess on Tuesday, July 09, 2013
Yes, but the translation is not as good as the original words of Sir Walter
Scott. Instead of reading amateur translation of the text that came
originally from a poem in English, I recommend just reading the poem. If
you google for Walter Scott Hymn to the Virgin or "Ellens dritter Gesang"
or "Schubert Ave Maria history", you'll find the words. As much as I
appreciate the person who uploaded this, he isn't exactly Walter Scott.

serrateresa on Tuesday, July 09, 2013
What is funny? But I am glad I made you laugh.

serrateresa on Wednesday, July 10, 2013
The real title of this song is "Ellens dritter Gesang", and it's part of
cycle of seven songs to words of the poem by Walter Scott "Lady of the
Lake" translated into German. James Douglas once Earl of Bothwell is exiled
as enemy and hides in a cave, hist daughter Ellen prays to the Virgin for
safety (someone overhears her and falls in love...). "Ave, Maria! Maiden
mild! Oh listen to a maiden's prayer; For thou canst hear tho' from the
wild, And Thou canst save amid despair,..."

This conversation is amusing. Talent is talent even when dressed in
different costuming, wearing varied masks. Members of every generation have
disliked the music of the generations that followed. It is the tired mantra
of closed-minded bias. There happens to be brilliant music being made today
in all genres. I love Schubert and I love Tupac and neither could do what
the other one does.

Robin B. Smith on Tuesday, August 13, 2013
This is gorgeous. I still prefer to hear Stevie sing it, though ;-)

jewelmarkess on Wednesday, August 14, 2013
It's not an aria, it's a Lied, a song.

jewelmarkess on Saturday, August 17, 2013
Maria Callas has never recorded this, so you couldn't have possibly heard
her singing this. What you could've heard are "fake" videos which generally
feature Barbara Bonney's voice with Callas' name on the title and picture.
Funny how it seemed "richer" to you.

Crime Prince on Thursday, August 22, 2013
That is extremely close minded. Rap does not always have to be about that,
and can be extremely complex in it's lyrics. Try to write something as good
as a song off Illmatic. FYI, You can't.

Crime Prince on Thursday, August 22, 2013
Music: The art or science of combining vocal or instrumental sounds (or
both) to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion. Rap
can definitely be music. Consider yourself OWNED.

I was walking through the hallway while listening to this and felt like I
was about to get assassinated.

michael birney on Saturday, August 31, 2013
lol, it's from Hitman.

jewelmarkess on Sunday, September 01, 2013
This is Barbara Bonney. Callas a) has never recorded this song b) has never
recorded anything in German c) has never recorded any Lieder or any art
songs, only opera arias c) sounds completely different. I think you
probably are confused by many "fakes" here in which people took this
recording of Barbara Bonney and attached Callas name and picture to it with
the purpose to attract more views or in ignorance.

jewelmarkess on Monday, September 02, 2013
You think you did, but what you saw were fakes. A number of people affixed
the picture and name of Callas to the video to mislead people.

alger3041 on Sunday, September 08, 2013
I must tell you that nothing for me will ever equal that given in the Notre
Dame concert of 1979 featuring Luciano Pavarotti. The orchestral
arrangement and choral contributions really add to it, and actually make me
cry. Please listen to it if you do not know it or never heard it.

jewelmarkess on Saturday, September 21, 2013
This is Barbara Bonney, and if you read the description, it says so down
below.

jewelmarkess on Sunday, September 22, 2013
This is Barbara Bonney and it says so in the description. Once and for all,
find other videos of Callas and Bonney e.g. Callas' singing Norma or Tosca
or Verdi Ave Maria from Otello and hear for yourself that this is not her
voice. Also, find recordings of Barbara Bonney and hear for yourself that
it's her voice. Also, learn that you tube is full of fakes and that often
people take a recording of one singer and attach the name of Callas or
Pavarotti to it to attract views.

Jesse Flagler on Thursday, September 26, 2013
what is wrong with you just sit down and shut up

jewelmarkess on Friday, September 27, 2013
This is the original version.

jewelmarkess on Wednesday, October 02, 2013
True. I just view religious art of any religion as depicting a story that
may or may not have some symbolic meaning. Like during the Soviet Union the
guides in Hermitage viewed paintings of Madonna with child as symbols of
motherhood and sacrifice. Incidentally, this is "Ellens dritter Gesang" or
Ellen's third song from a cycle of songs to Walter Scott poem "Lady of the
Lake" translated into German so it's about as religious as a prayer of any
character in a work of literature.

Wunderschöne Version - wie heißt die Sängering?

hassi44 on Friday, October 04, 2013
The subjects use a sort of "calculative behavior" to deal with the problems
in the game and are therefore, when playing the game, psychopaths with a
non-remorseful, cold and calculating thought process. However when the
subjects (Every single one of them, they were 17) discontinued playing the
game the behavioral result was quite the opposite. The subjects were more
tolerant of others in general, payed more attention to their surroundings
and the needs of others.
