She had three older sisters and Mahmood was her older brother. She was an accomplished dancer and usually performed mujra dances in movies. Her mujra in film Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam ( Saquia aaj mujhe neend nahin aaye gi...) is one of the best ever performed in any movie. She married director S. Ali Akbar on 6-12-1963. Akbar had directed Mahmood's film Chhote Nawab earlier.
