Even though he came from a rich background,Ghalibs life was tormented and sorrowful. His wife was ruthless, his children died in their infancy,he never earned a living and was in debt even till his death. That's why he writes'hua jab gham se youn be-hiss to gham kya sar ke katne ka'[i've had so much of despair in my life that now even the worst troubles don't bother me] Indeed beautiful poetry that speaks about the ugly realities of L-I-F-E!

No doubt,a masterpiece created when remarkable poetry of Mirza Ghalib is given voice of Jagjit Singh. But one must admit a very high standard of acting as exhibited by Mr.Naseer-Ud-Din Shah.Just watch the expressions in this video.

ghazal contains TASAWWUF,,,,,,,,,,,muzaffargeete

DrDhakna on Saturday, February 26, 2011
There are two 'Kuch' in the misra. The first 'Kuch' means, the entire universe, the galaxies, the moons, the stars, the skies and ALL creation (made by God). The second 'kuch' means the Mirza 'himself' as he compares himself with the first the 'kuch' and implies that he is like a grain of sand in front of ALL creation that God has made.
Now Listen to the Shair again with 2 separate meanings of kuch n feel the helplessness and agony of Mirza.
This poetry is out of this world!!

what would have gone wrong if I didn't exist.

khwarinn2 on Thursday, April 28, 2011
first misra had double meaning..it could mean that when i was nothing i was god.and if i was nothing i would have been god meaning as in sufism or in pantheism god is everywhere we are his reflection. god was always there.it can also mean the more easily understood meaning: when there was nothing there was god and if there had been nothing there would have been god

.You have made very nice comments; even though, it seems Ghalib lived a sad life but in reality he experienced life in much deeper sense than very many people did or may do in future---this made his life much more richer than we can imgaine of. Facing the ugly realities speaking of it in such a respectful way without demeaning life itself and its Creator was perhaps hallmark of Ghalib's style. How rare we find this happening! I am speechless.

mirkali on Saturday, May 07, 2011
DrDhakna , thanks for presenting the hidden many meanings of this poetry. This art was the signature of the great poets and sufis of that time. The blessings of colonialism brought a wave in India when parents would not send their children but to convent schools only. Even though I do not deny the benefits of this, yet losing the connection with our own history and language was the price we paid...

.We now correct Shakespeare at the expense of our inability understannd the wisdom and the spirituality that was at our doorsteps. I hope people like you may keep these legends alive. Thanks.

I wonder what it would be like to smoke a joint with Ghalib.

Still alive in our Hearts...

I salute u 4 ur profound comprehension. your first/former interpretation of first misra is absolutely correct because latter lines support the same thought! GOD BLESS U N KEEP IT UP.

Mukesh Kumar on Monday, August 01, 2011
Nice explanation mate, but in my opinion, first explanation is more appropriate here. Because, after first misra he says: "Duboya mujhko honay ne, Na hota mein tau kya hota".

A huge loss indeed. As a young man i grew up listening to his ghazals along with my friends in Karachi. He will always bring me memories of my college days, and my obsession with Ghalib at that time. His ghazals ,especially Ghalib ghazals that he sang had a huge impact on me personally, and gave color to my life and many other young men like me at that time.Thankyou sir

A greatest legend of Gazal died, I loved his Gazals, since last 10 years had been listing him almost everyday, I was so saddened by his death, that i saw him in my dream, the very next day of his death, in the dream i am telling Jagjit that " i am excusing that I could not attend his live shows, and wanted to see him personally ". He was not only a good singer, but a good person, that's what was said by, Lata Mangeshker in an Interview to BBC. My personal condolences to Chitra Jee.

According to poet Nazm:

The author has composed this verse according to the the Sufistic view: that is, When I was nothing, I was God, and having become something, I became alienated from my origin, and to become separate from that benevolent origin turned out to be bad for me.

IShqSufiana on Sunday, January 01, 2012
According to Hali:

In an entirely new manner he has given non-existence priority over existence, and through a strange expectation he has expressed a longing for complete nonexistence. The meaning of the first line is apparent. In the second line, apparently the thought is expressed, If I did not exist, then what harm would it be?

IShqSufiana on Sunday, January 01, 2012
According to Hali(contd):
But the speaker's intent is, If I did not exist, it would be worth seeing what thing I would be-- which means, I would be God. Because in the first line it has already been said, If I were nothing, then I would be God.
